a very good surprise

I was amazed and very happy to learn that The Old Bad Songs is discussed in a recent academic article called Heritage Film Audiences 2.0: period film audiences and online film cultures - and very pleased with what the article's author, Claire Monk, said about the story and its updating of Maurice.

I'm grateful to rusty_armour for telling me about this, and very pleased that her stories A Private View, Buckingham & Shaftesbury: The Schemes and the Theatrics and especially her brilliant Maurice parody, The Boathouse, are also discussed in the paper - her own post about it is here.

I had to calm down a bit before I could post about this, since my initial reaction was mostly wild incoherent squeeing...

rusty_armour's stories are discussed on pp. 36-7 of the pdf file and The Old Bad Songs on pp. 37-8. Maurice icons by coloryourdreams are also mentioned in the endnotes, particularly the wonderful "Shut up and fuck me" icon of Scudder in cricket whites.

for this post it seems right to use the eumelkeks icon which got me started on writing Lestrade.

You and your wonderful story deserve every bit of notice.

It was my introduction to Maurice, a film and novel that I now treasure.

Hip, hip, hooray!

thank you very much! *glows*

one of the things that makes me happiest about that story is that several people read and/or watched Maurice because of it.

Congrats! As someone else who was introduced to the novel and film by you I'm so pleased your work has been recognised in a wider field :)

thank you very much! I'm very happy about this, and still very proud to have introduced you to Maurice. *beams*

Well done! They mentioend the 'In your bushes...' icon! I love that one!

thank you very much!

I love that icon as well - I'm not sure they gave a source for it, though, or at least it wasn't on either of the sites in the footnote - it's by avon_saille.

Who are "they"? Do you think Claire Monk is a collective?
Jan. 16th, 2012 04:32 pm (UTC)
I have my suspicions about who Claire Monk might be. I first found out about the paper through a comment made for a Maurice fic recs entry I posted at gravesdiggers. I could be wrong, but I think you might get some idea of the author's identity after reading the comment in question.

no, I'm just being ungrammatical because I'm knackered! according to the bio note on the article there is just the one of her...

thank you very much! *beams*

it was very strange to see it there, but such a pleasure - especially because I felt she really got what OBS was doing with Lestrade and with the updating of Maurice.

I know I said this already, but I'm extremely happy that The Bad Old Songs was discussed in this paper. I meant to say this last night, but it gives me incentive to re-read the story. To my shame, I don't think I gave you feedback for it. I'll be sure to do so this time.

Thank you very much for mentioning where my own fic is mentioned in the paper. It was also great that you mentioned the references made to coloryourdreams's and eumelkeks's icons. :-)

That is fantastic! Although, I admit my first reaction was, 'PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THE FANFIC!' Ahem. ;)

In all seriousness, this is really awesome though. Congratulations! It's really nice to see papers like this discussing stories by fanfic authors one actually knows and lies and enjoys. :)

thank you very much! yes, I had a moment of 'PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THE FANFIC!' as well, but was mostly too busy bouncing up and down to care. it is a real pleasure because what she says about Lestrade's role in the fic is exactly what I wanted to do with it, and what excited me when I thought of it.
