fic: Sleeper (221b ficlet)

Title: Sleeper (221b ficlet)
Author: fengirl88
Fandom: BBC Sherlock crossover with E.M. Forster, Maurice.
Pairing: Lestrade/Maurice
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: None
Wordcount: 221
Disclaimer: These characters are still not mine. Nor are the films mentioned.
Summary: Train journeys are always better in black and white.

A/N: A 221b ficlet for julie_izumi to thank her for her wonderful Maurice/Lestrade icons.
Thanks also to my fellow viewers at shwatchalongs for a splendid Sunday evening watching The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, and to blooms84 for suggesting I write something with a Scottish connection.

ETA: there is now a sequel to this, Winter Sights.

Sleeper

“They don't make them like that any more,” Maurice says, sighing contentedly as the credits roll for I Know Where I’m Going.

“I liked the weird dream sequence on the train,” Lestrade says. “Don't suppose sleeper compartments are still like that.”

“Train journeys are always better in black and white,” Maurice says. “Like Robert Donat hanging off the Forth Bridge in The Thirty-Nine Steps.”

Lestrade shudders. Never been good with heights.

He quite fancies a trip to Scotland, though.

The connecting door’s unlocked to create a two-berth sleeper cabin.

“Twin beds,” Lestrade says, laughing. “Very 1940s.”

“Come here, you,” Maurice says, tugging at Lestrade's new silk dressing-gown. “God, you look the part.”

“Is that code for I want to shag you?” Lestrade asks hopefully.

“No subtext here,” Maurice says. “It's all text.”

He kisses Lestrade, running his hands down his back to squeeze his arse.

“Mm,” Lestrade says, fondling Maurice appreciatively. “You feel nice.”

“Long night ahead of us,” Maurice says, pressing his thigh between Lestrade's. “Should have warned you, I never sleep well on train journeys.”

The rocking rhythm of the train as it pulls away from Euston Station suggests finding something to do till they reach Dunkeld in the early morning might not be too hard.

“Don't worry,” Lestrade says. “If you need anything I'll be in my bunk.”

***

The film they don't make them like any more is Powell and Pressburger's I Know Where I'm Going (1945).  Dream sequence is here.

Lestrade's new silk dressing-gown

Christmas present? Pleasant thought. No wonder Maurice can't sleep.

I don't think I've ever been in a sleeper cabin in the UK. My family once took a six-berth one on a train from Calais to Florence (or did we change at Milan?)

the standard ones are not so much fun, but I'm guessing they would go first class...

a cuddly Maurice fic!! was not expecting Scotland so soon! beautiful and so nice to have a visit from these boys before Christmas, particularly in their very handsome new icon. This is especially eery, in a way, because it ties in with a small obsession related to Powell and Pressburger that I will not bore you with. But--I very much appreciate the little reference. *kiss*

aha! will grill you about your P and P obsession very soon... I love that film dearly, and if I had been writing a longer piece would have gone on about it much more!

whatever that hill is in the background made me think of Scotland, and that and the black and white were too good to resist.

...I am echoing LEstrade's sentiment in the last line of this!

Train porn? _God_ yes!

This whole piece is just chock full of perfect lines:
"Train journeys are always better in black and white,”

"The rocking rhythm of the train as it pulls away from Euston Station suggests finding something to do till they reach Dunkeld in the early morning might not be too hard."

GAH! Such wonderful writing! Utter love. Memming like fury!

thank you so much! oh yes you MUST. I fell in love with that film in my teens and could have gone on about it for ages (but then it wouldn't have been a 221b and I couldn't resist that once the last line came into my mind!).

I have to confess that I read this ficlet last night, but didn't have a chance to comment. I've always found train journies very romantic and I'm a sucker for films revolving around them. I love the idea that Lestrade and Maurice like to watch old movies together. For some reason, I can picture Lestrade being a Film Noir fan...and I'm digressing. *g* I'll just quickly say kudos for the trip to Scotland in a two-berth sleeper cabin. And kudos for some delicious dialogue. I particularly enjoyed the lines at the very end:

“Long night ahead of us,” Maurice says, pressing his thigh between Lestrade's. “Should have warned you, I never sleep well on train journeys.”

The rocking rhythm of the train as it pulls away from Euston Station suggests finding something to do till they reach Dunkeld in the early morning might not be too hard.

“Don't worry,” Lestrade says. “If you need anything I'll be in my bunk.”

Surprisingly, I've never seen I Know Where I'm Going, though I'd heard of it. After watching that clip, I want to see the whole movie. I really like Wendy Hiller, though I'm used to seeing her as a more mature lady. Speaking of films, I'm so glad you got to see The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. Wasn't the cinematography in Scotland beautiful?

thank you very much! very glad you enjoyed it.

oh you MUST see IKWIG, it's just glorious. and it's interesting you mention film noir - thank you for that. I've been thinking about using a particular noir for one kissbingo fic but haven't worked out what to do with it yet. will think again.

yes, the cinematography in TPLOSH was lovely - I lived in Scotland for several years and I adore the Highlands. am hoping to see them again tomorrow if I can get to where I'm supposed to be going today!
